I have created such a classification for proper names in the Dutch
language, see

Please let me know if you need help with translation and/or mapping of
specific words to German or English.

Perhaps you could use it as a starting point for a German system since
our languages are reasonably similar.

Is the abbreviation used in
http://help.arcgis.com/de/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//003s00000036000000
also applicable for http://osm.org ?

I think both a tag and a lookup table could provide proper abbreviation
from (German) Straße to Str and Gasse to G. and Platz to Pl. and (Dutch)
straat to str. and steeg to stg. and plein to pl.

If someone would make an proper name abbreviation package here
