... the problem might be related to the Solaris specific code of smartctl.

There were only few changes since Solaris support was added in 2003, see 
[1]. There is no active maintainer for the os_solaris.cpp module.

Did previous versions of smartctl work for you?

Do you use a precompiled smartmontools package from some repository?
If yes, you might want to forward the problem report also to the package 
maintainer.
