Hi,

I just built smartmontools from the(?) repository.

I have an SIIG 3.0 USB 2x docking station. When I do "smartctl -i /dev/sdb" I get:

fc35-bash 5.1 ~# smartctl -i /dev/sdb
smartctl 7.3 2021-03-02 r5210 [x86_64-linux-5.12.0-0.rc1.162.fc35.x86_64] (local build)

/dev/sdb: Unknown USB bridge [0x152d:0x2551 (0x100)]
Please specify device type with the -d option.

Use smartctl -h to get a usage summary

The disk is:

fc35-bash 5.1 ~# fdisk -l /dev/sdb
Disk /dev/sdb: 465.76 GiB, 500107862016 bytes, 976773168 sectors
Disk model: 5AS
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x00056b05

Device     Boot Start       End   Sectors   Size Id Type
/dev/sdb1        2048 976773167 976771120 465.8G 83 Linux

When I try smartctl -d scsi  -i I get:

fc35-bash 5.1 ~# smartctl -d scsi -i /dev/sdb
smartctl 7.3 2021-03-02 r5210 [x86_64-linux-5.12.0-0.rc1.162.fc35.x86_64] (local build)

/dev/sda in the laptop produces what I was expecting from /dev/sdb.

Lacks SMART capability? The drive isn't that old. 500gb Seagate laptop drive.

Am I doing something wrong? Is it possible that the SIIG docking station is NOT allowing ALL device commands?

If you could help me with this I would be GREATLY appreciative.

Best regards,

George...
