*INVITATION"Securing DiSSENT: Digital security for journalists in
exile"20.3.2025 at MiCT ROOF, 2pm to 4pm*

Censored for their work by repressive regimes, more journalists have been
forced to report from exile in the last few years than ever before. In
addition to myriad other risks and insecurities, these journalists are more
vulnerable to digital security threats because they must communicate
digitally with their sources, audiences and with each other to do their
work.

A lot of research and information is now available about digital risks
faced by
journalists and how to address them. There is also a lot of evidence-based
information now available about the risks faced by journalists working from
exile, including digital risks and insecurities they are exposed to. But
when we bring these two together, we see that the digital security tools
and solutions being recommended for exiled journalists often require
expensive hardware. They are asked to rely on commercial services such as
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), multi-factor authorisation (MFA)
applications and security key-based hardware authentication which are
mostly paywalled. These are also expensive for exiled journalists working
with limited resources.

There is also little discussion about how these proprietary tools,
platforms and
solutions are quite often offered by for-profit technology giants. With the
current illiberal political climate in the USA where many of the tech
giants who provide these security applications and services are based, the
incentives for Google and its peer companies to maintain and provide free
or low-cost digital security services to humanitarian organisations or
journalists is arguably eroding fast. We do not have alternatives in sight
yet, if the supports that journalists rely on disappear or are rolled back.

With this urgent background, this panel brings together experts on software
systems and digital security for journalists, exile media practitioners,
and supporters of exile media and to ask what researchers, journalists in
exile and media support organisations can do differently to safeguard
exiled journalists and the crucial work they do, and the people they work
with, from the digital insecurities they face.
