Liebe FOME-Listenmitglieder,
gerne möchte ich Eure Aufmerksamkeit auf diese Initiative lenken, die
Verschlüsselung stärken möchte, was vor allem Journalisten zu Gute kommt.
Viele Grüsse
Friederike
The Global Encryption Coalition (https://www.globalencryption.org) was
established by
the *Center for Democracy & Technology* (https://cdt.org),
*Global Partners Digital*<https://www.gp-digital.org/>, and
the *I**nternet Society* <https://www.internetsociety.org/>
with the goal of promoting and defending encryption where it is under
threat. As you will know, a number
of governments around the world are discussing regulations that would
create backdoors to end-to-end encryption in messaging services like
Signal and Whatsapp. At the Internet Society we believe that such steps
are dangerous as they could be abused by governments to harass
journalists and crack down on freedom of expression. Even in countries
with a more robust rule of law, encryption backdoors would become weak
points that could be exploited by criminals or hostile governments to
surveil key individuals including journalists.
This is of significant concern to journalists as they rely on encrypted
messaging services to protect their sources, keep themselves safe, and
do their jobs. Please read our write-up here
(https://www.internetsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Encryption-for-Journalists-Factsheet.pdf)
which
outlines the main points.
This coalition already includes a number of press freedom and media
development organizations including Article 19, CPJ, FPF, and IPI but we
would like to broaden membership to collect views and amplify our
collective voice. The coalition will be working towards Global
Encryption Day on October 21st where they will release a statement in
support of protecting encryption that organizations will be able to sign.
*The application form to join the coalition can be found here
**https://www.globalencryption.org/join*. If you have any questions or
concerns please feel free to reach out.
Best regards,
*Callum Voge*
