<p>Liebe FOME-Listenmitglieder,<br>
<br>
gerne möchte ich Eure Aufmerksamkeit auf diese Initiative lenken,
die Verschlüsselung stärken möchte, was vor allem Journalisten zu
Gute kommt.<br>

The Global Encryption Coalition (<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://www.globalencryption.org">https://www.globalencryption.org</a>)
was established by</p>
<p> the <b>Center for Democracy & Technology</b>
(<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://cdt.org">https://cdt.org</a>), <br>
</p>
<p><b>Global Partners Digital</b><a class="moz-txt-link-rfc2396E" href="https://www.gp-digital.org/"><https://www.gp-digital.org/></a>,
and</p>
<p> the <b>I</b><b>nternet Society</b>
<a class="moz-txt-link-rfc2396E" href="https://www.internetsociety.org/"><https://www.internetsociety.org/></a> <br>
</p>
<p>with the goal of promoting and defending encryption where it is
under threat. As you will know, a number<br>
of governments around the world are discussing regulations that
would create backdoors to end-to-end encryption in messaging
services like<br>
Signal and Whatsapp. At the Internet Society we believe that such
steps are dangerous as they could be abused by governments to
harass<br>
journalists and crack down on freedom of expression. Even in
countries with a more robust rule of law, encryption backdoors
would become weak<br>
points that could be exploited by criminals or hostile governments
to surveil key individuals including journalists. <br>
<br>
This is of significant concern to journalists as they rely on
encrypted messaging services to protect their sources, keep
themselves safe, and<br>
do their jobs. Please read our write-up here
(<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://www.internetsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Encryption-for-Journalists-Factsheet.pdf">https://www.internetsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Encryption-for-Journalists-Factsheet.pdf</a>)
which<br>
outlines the main points. <br>
<br>
This coalition already includes a number of press freedom and
media development organizations including Article 19, CPJ, FPF,
and IPI but we<br>
would like to broaden membership to collect views and amplify our
collective voice. The coalition will be working towards Global<br>
Encryption Day on October 21st where they will release a
statement in support of protecting encryption that organizations
will be able to sign. <br>
<br>
<b>The application form to join the coalition can be found here </b><b><a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://www.globalencryption.org/join">https://www.globalencryption.org/join</a></b>.
If you have any questions or<br>
concerns please feel free to reach out. <br>
<br>
Best regards,<br>
