JOURNALISM RESEARCH GRANT
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
The Falling Walls Foundation is offering a research grant to support media representatives from around the world to report on a scientific topic related to BERLIN SCIENCE WEEK 2021. Selected journalists will be given exclusive access to the participating organisations of BERLIN SCIENCE WEEK and their associated experts.
The Falling Walls Foundation calls for applications from journalists outlining their chosen scientific topic relating to BERLIN SCIENCE WEEK. Successful applicants will be invited to join an exchange with one of the festival’s numerous renowned partner organisations and /or speakers. Reporting can take place before, during or after the BERLIN SCIENCE WEEK (1–10 November 2021).
Up to ten media representatives will be selected. They will each receive a research grant of €500, provided by the Berlin Senate Chancellery for Higher Education and Research. The grant will be awarded as a lump sum for digital research and reporting (remote).
The research grant aims to further strengthen the international public perception of Berlin as a location for scientific excellence and to contribute to the promotion of independent science journalism.
WHO MAY APPLY?
Applications are open to media representatives from around the world with a proven track record as science journalist (freelance or permanent). Applicants are expected to research and publish on a chosen scientific topic related to the BERLIN SCIENCE WEEK. There are no restrictions on specific media areas or the form of publication.

APPLICATION DOCUMENTS TO INCLUDE
· Cover letter and short exposé/research plan on your preferred topic, including planned publication date and media contact.
· Please note: The subject of your reporting must be one of the event topics. Please choose your preferred field of work from the list below.
· Short CV showing your journalistic career and if applicable journalism grants, awards etc.
· Max. three examples of your journalistic work within a field of science

APPLICATION PROCESS
A jury of scientists and communications experts will choose and inform the successful candidates by October 8, 2021. Unfortunately, due to the high number of anticipated applications unsuccessful applicants will not be notified.
Travel to Berlin is not necessary as most of the events will be streamed online. If journal ists would like to organize their own stay, the research grant already includes allowances for living and travel expenses, no further reimbursement will be made by The Falling Walls Foundation. The Falling Walls Foundation is not able to act as an inviting organisation for any visa processes and does not offer any accommodation.
There is no legal claim to the scholarship. Applications received after 24 September 2021 will not be considered.
ABOUT BERLIN SCIENCE WEEK 2021
This year, the BERLIN SCIENCE WEEK together with the Falling Walls Science Summit will take place in Berlin from 1–10 November with a diverse programme, and numerous renowned partner organisations from all over the world (ETH Zurich, National Research Council Canada, Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Austrian Institute of Technology, and many more).
There will be around 200 events with a huge variety of formats and topics: from ethics in AI, digitalisation in farming, diversity or trust in science to the question if we are prepared for the next pandemic, among many others.
