Invitation / Work in Progress II
The politics of maskirovka and hate speech in Ukraine

WORK IN PROGRESS is a new series of talks organised by MiCT and hosted at Spike Berlin. The second session, taking place on Thursday October 19th 2017 will see Oleksiy Matsuka and Tobias Zielony in conversation on the topic of ‘The politics of maskirovka and hate speech in Ukraine’. Before the talk Tobias Zielony will show his new 9-minute animation "Maskirovka” about the queer and underground community in Kyiv. The animation mounts layer upon layer: hooligans fights, TV news about the war in Eastern Ukraine as well as images of masking, dancing and hiding. Oleksiy Matsuka will talk about the increase of hate speech in local media in eastern Ukraine and the impact it has had on a local and national level. MiCT has been working Oleksiy Matuska and Tobias Zielony on several projects.

Oleksiy Matsuka is a Ukrainian journalist. He is the editor-in-chief of Novosti Donbassa, a Donbass news website. In 2013, he launched Donetskaya Pravda, which focuses on investigating public officials. He has also reported on Donetsk for Hromadske.TV and for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Ukrainian Service. In 2011, Matsuka's apartment was set on fire after he published a series of articles on the embezzlement of public funds. In April 2014, his car was set on fire after he wrote an article titled "Russia's deep ties to Donetsk's Kremlin collaborators. In April 2014, Reporters Without Borders named Matsuka in its list of 100 Information Heroes In December 2014, the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression presented him with its International Press Freedom Award.

Tobias Zielony is a Berlin-based artist and photographer. He recently traveled to Ukraine to produce his new work "Maskirovka" currently on show at a solo exhibition at the Von der Heydt-Kunsthalle Wuppertal. The term maskirovka commonly refers to a Russian tradition of military deception. Recently it has been reemerged to describe the Russian intervention in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. Tobias Zielony's work has been widely published and exhibited. In 2015 he was one of the five artists representing Germany at the Venice Biennale.

The event is hosted by MICT and is funded by the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt.
