*MEDIA & MAKERS: JUBA 2012*
*Open Knowledge & Sustainable Media Forum*
December 11 - 13, 2012, Juba, South Sudan
MEDIA & MAKERS: JUBA is an attempt to chart the common ground between
media businesses and the open source movement in Sudan and South Sudan.
The conference will explore new solutions for the extraordinary
challenges faced by the two countries, look at new ways to make use of
existing resources, and examine new means of participatory media
production, innovation, and collaboration across all sectors of
society. It will be an opportunity for experts and media practitioners
from South Sudan, (North) Sudan, and other parts of the world to discuss
the future of the media sector and the role of the open systems/open
data movement for the world's two youngest nations.
Both Sudan and South Sudan face the complex challenge of establishing
stable and democratic structures and laying the foundation for new civil
societies. Amidst the euphoria of a new start, political repression and
economic necessities, the media play a central role as a citizens'
forum, as watchdogs, and as mediators. From this point of view, access
to information, the aggregation and distribution of knowledge, and the
practice of free expression and debate are major elements in the complex
establishment of democratic structures in post-conflict regions.
MEDIA & MAKERS: JUBA aims to develop scenarios for a sustainable media
sector in South Sudan and Sudan, with a particular emphasis on openness,
accessibility and transparency. The three-day event will consist of
small working groups, framed by international keynotes. We will bring
together start-up entrepreneurs with experienced business people,
seasoned policy makers with enthusiastic activists, representatives of
traditional mass media with the protagonists of the social media
revolution, and lofty theorists with practitioners on the ground. We
expect these meetings to yield intense debates, new ideas and
collaborative efforts to build a sustainable, transparent and
accountable media sector in Sudan / South Sudan.
