        MAKERS: JUBA is an attempt to chart the common ground between

        businesses and the open source movement in Sudan and South
        Sudan. The
        conference will explore new solutions for the extraordinary
        challenges faced by
        the two countries, look at new ways to make use of existing
        resources, and
        examine new means of participatory media production, innovation,
        and
        collaboration across all sectors of society.</span><span

Sudan
        and South Sudan face the complex challenge of establishing
        stable and
        democratic structures and laying the foundation for new civil
        societies. Amidst
        the euphoria of a new start, political repression and economic
        necessities, the
        media play a central role as a citizens’ forum, as watchdogs,
        and as mediators.
        From this point of view, access to information, the aggregation
        and
        distribution of knowledge, and the practice of free expression
        and debate are
        major elements in the complex establishment of democratic
        structures in
        post-conflict regions. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

        start-up entrepreneurs
        with experienced business people, seasoned policy makers with
        enthusiastic
        activists, representatives of traditional mass media with the
        protagonists of
        the social media revolution, and lofty theorists with
        practitioners on the ground.
        We expect these meetings to yield intense debates, new ideas and
        collaborative
        efforts to build a sustainable, transparent and accountable
        media sector in
