[Tiptoi] French pens rejecting custom GME - German vs French hardware difference?

Ah yes, I did reply to him, but I think it only went to his email address.

So my reply was that even changing the language to French still doesn't work.

I sent him my .gme file, which he found strange, and which didn't work with his second-generation pen. I'm sending you a copy of his reply :

"how did you generate this strange gme.

I did the following test:
- save it on my french 2.gen pen. - did not work
- repack it with tttool - save it on my 2. gen pen - did not work
- language FRENCH - did not work
- language GERMAN - save it on my 3. gen pen - works :-)

but how did you generate this file - it's really strange?

I don`t know if other self made files work on this stick - I will test
this later.

Best Regards
Dominik

(BTW - I don't have a printer at the moment - but I found "je decouvre
la ferme :-)")
btw2: I'm working on a translatoin script (german - french) - it works
somehow but the games are not working yet.

I'm sorry - I don' have a pipline to print at the moment. But I have the
book 128 here. Maybe you can change the pid in your"

Hi Gaëlle,

Just to be sure, you didn't forget: are you sure the gme you are trying
to use is "FRENCH" (tttool set-language)?

Because sometimes I had the impression (I didn't do extensive tests)
that a gme without language information (which should work on any pen)
did not work on special pens - so I added the pen's language.

Just to be clear: if your pen is French, every gme must have 'FRENCH' as
the language (or none at all) - so if you want to try an Italian or
German gme, you must use tttool set-language FRENCH.

I have a second-generation pen with French firmware - I could test it
for you over the weekend. And I have a third-generation pen with a lot
of French books (but with German firmware - because there is no French
firmware).

Did you try unpacking and packing the gme with tttool.

Best Regards,
Dominik

Cordialement,
Dominik

Hi Gaelle,

Did you see the email from Dominik sent to the list? You didn't reply to that.
In our email exchanges I also asked you to tttool set-language FRENCH, you said there was no effect. Maybe you could try this again after reading Dominik's reply? To make sure it worked, compare extracted yaml's from Book.gme with Custom.gme. Send these to the list too.

Hi Marius,
Test results with Product ID 1 (French book "Je découvre la Ferme"):
Test 1: Book START code + Book GME = Works
Test 2: Book START code + Custom GME = "Fichier introuvable"
Test 3: Printed START code + Book GME = Works!
Test 4: Printed START code + Custom GME = "Fichier introuvable"
Key finding: Test 3 proves my printed OID codes work perfectly! The pen can read them and successfully loads the official Ravensburger GME.
This confirms:

  *
Printing quality is fine
  *
OID codes are correctly recognized
  *
The pen specifically rejects custom GME files (both tttool and SoniqPen)

There must be something in the custom GME structure that my French pens don't accept, even though the exact same files work on your German pen.
Any ideas what could cause this systematic rejection of custom GMEs while accepting official ones?
Thanks!
Gaëlle

I personally wouldn't try flashing a firmware due to risks of bricking the pen. There must be something we are missing, since the pen is functional.

Would anybody on the list be kind enough to print the PDF sent by Gaelle and try it with the .gme also on the thread? It worked for my on my German pen.
Does anybody have a French pen? Does it have the same issues?

Gaelle, would you please try again setting the same product id as one of your French books? And also have a custom OID region with a sound. Using tttool or in the SoniqPen studio just change product id. The Power on also should be set to play a sound.
So we have:
1) original Book power on, Book region
2) printed power on, region
3) Book gme, custom gme

Your pen doesn't work with printed & custom gme.
with custom .gme: if you scan the original book power on, will it do anything?
with book .gme: scan the printed power on, will it start same as the book starts?
(remember to "empty trash" after you delete .gme from pen)

Well, they have different firmware files, AFAIR. So maybe they are
more strict in checking stuff. Maybe they enforce a certain structure
or something which the French books fulfill but not the (older) German
ones.

You could try to flash a German firmware and see if that changes the situation.
