I log the output of 'smartctl -d sat -x /dev/sda' daily. I recently noticed that I see an
increasing Reallocated_Sector_Ct, so I installed a replacement disk, copied the data across
and adjusted the mount points. The old disk is still installed but idle and not mounted.
My issue is I see that Reallocated_Sector_Ct is still growing. iostat shows no write activity.
The smartd config schedules a short selftest daily.
Is the selftest the cause of the increasing count?
I understand that reallocation is something the disk does on a failed write. Are there other reasons?
If it matters, the disk is an old (2012?) internal 3.5" 3TB:
Model Family: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 (AF)
Device Model: ST3000DM001-9YN166
