I built the version 

smartmontools release 7.3 dated 2020-12-30 at 16:48:30 UTC
smartmontools SVN rev 5216 dated 2021-04-14 at 13:29:40
smartmontools build host: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu
smartmontools build with: C++11, GCC 10.2.0
smartmontools configure arguments: [no arguments given]


I had success with a Samsung T7 with this command

sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda -d sntasmedia

Ubuntu 21.04
