[Smartmontools-database] USB external drive reports "Read Device Identity failed"

Happy for any suggestions!

Seagate (STEB8000100) Expansion Desktop 8TB, USB 3.0 attached to Raspberry
Pi 4B. Listed at http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids albeit with different
model number and capacity.

relevant lsusb output:
ID 0bc2:331a Seagate RSS LLC

Trying 'sudo smartctl --all -d sat -T permissive /dev/sda' returns:
