smtpd ist im chroot. Damit muss auch der Socket von saslauthd in das
chroot zeigen.

Was steht in /etc/saslauthd.conf oder wo immer Debian das Teil hingebaut hat?

Das sieht gut aus. Funktioniert
testsaslauthd -u user -p password -s smtp

Wenn ja, dann teste es mal auf der Kommandozeile per telnet ohne Mailclient.
