[Individual-members-EL] hello

Hi again, all

I can quite see that the Brussels office is overworked, and that there is no
point in asking the staff there to take on producing additional
publications. They have quite enough work to be getting on with already. But
if the EL is to thrive, it needs to find ways of using the energies and
talents of its members. At the moment, the individual membership of the EL
is very small. We are all too scattered across Europe to have any real
presence on the ground, in the day-to-day politics of our communities. So I
assume that most of us have joined the EL not for what it is now, but for
what we hope it might become in the future. We have lots to discuss: what
should a European Left look like in the 21st century? What ideas should it
be based on? How broadly should it define itself? How should it relate to
national/regional/local politics? How should it relate to the history and
heritage of European socialism(s)? And so on. If we don't find a way of
engaging the individual members in dialogue and debate, as well as action,
they will start to drift away again, which would be a pity.

Cheers

Francis

Hi all,

First of all I would like to contain the excessive reaction of Uli. Being in
Brussels I can guarantee you that the EL office does what it can with the
few people working there in so many different things. So, they could have
forgotten to attend a request for affiliation, which is an error. But from
there to " about the continuous obstacle to individual membership that the
Brussels office seems to constitute" it is more than unfair, false. In any
case, Uli has not authorisation, at least from the individual members in
Brussels, to take any stand on our behalf in any meeting with Helmut
Scholtz. It seems obvious that if somebody has to complain is the affected
member.

About the publication, in Brussels we have thought about doing anything of
this kind for our past activities. The last activity we had was a debate
about the EL Congress with the Belgian delegates in a Social Center and
before a quite successful debate about the Lisbon Treaty.

However, for exchanging info and being really useful I think that we will
need more a kind of intranet between individual members, (something like
Drupal's softwares).

The bureau aimed to create a newsletter but things are going slowly because
the problem, from my viewpoint, is that parties want the EL to take
resources out of it but does not inject much of their time, action or energy
on it. They need to pass from the idea that the EL is out there to the
principle that they have to encourage national members of their parties to
contribute to the EL. But from the part of Izquierda Unida I can tell you
that the EL is barely known, not to say boycotted from the current contested
leadership which aimed at a point to join the European greens.

Best
Sigfrido

Hi all

We seem to be getting a few more individual members around the place,
which is good. We all come from different political backgrounds and
cultures, and presumably have different perspectives and reasons for
being in the ELP. I wonder whether there may be any basis for an ELP
discussion publication, in which individual ELP members, members of
affiliated parties and others could share practical experiences,
theoretical ideas, debates and so on, and discuss them. The sort of
thing I have in mind could be produced as a printable, collatable PDF
file and put on a website in the first instance.

What do others think? And would such an initiative meet any political
resistance?

Cheers

Francis
