Workshop: Basic income in Europe

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

ATTAC European Summer University, Saarbruecken

5 - 6:30 PM, Room: 2.16, House: A22

A basic income is a proposed system of social security, that periodically provides each person with a sum of money that is sufficient to live on. A basic income is entirely unconditional. Furthermore, there is no means test; the richest as well as the poorest person would receive it. It could help to solve the policy dilemmas of poverty and unemployment, and serve ideals associated with both the feminist and global movements. It may seem wildly utopian in a world in which a child under five dies of malnutrition every two seconds, but there are existing experiences with a basic income called "social cash" in Namibia. We are going to talk about the idea in general as well as a european-wide and a global vision.

Speakers: Avji Sirmoglu (Switzerland), Thomas Löding (Germany)

Working language: English, German

The European Summer University:

Another Europe for another World!

For years Attac has been organising big educational events during summer in many countries: to learn together and from each other, have discussions, exchange points of view, develop new strategies, meet different people and have fun together - that is a proven and successful concept.

In Summer 2008 for the first time there will be an European Attac Summer University! This offers to us a great opportunity to learn at a European level from each other und to develop strategies for a different Europe, a different World. The European Summer University is an important step to develop the capabilities of social movements in Europe.

The summer university will take place between the 1st to 6th August 2008 and will be staged at the University of Saarbruecken, where we will have an optimal infrastructure at our disposal.

Already almost all European groups of Attac declared that they will participate in the European Summer University 2008! Confirmed so far are: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

The concept of ESU 2008 foresees around 1,000 participants - likely working languages will be German, English and French. It is planned that the events will partially be translated simultaneously.

During the coming months the guideline for order of events and programme will be developed in a joint European process. We are looking forward to receiving your support, your ideas and suggestions!

The ESU 2008 should make an important contribution towards better communication, net-working and cooperation amongst the national Attac sections for a strong movement critical about globalisation in the whole of Europe.

Another Europe is possible!
