Press Release: Saturday, 15 November 2003

THOUSANDS AT PARIS RALLY “BITE BACK” AT BUSH GM FOOD PLAN

(Paris, 15th November) Just days before US President George Bush lands
in Europe, already ten thousand European citizens have signed formal
objections to the US attempt to force the introduction of GM food into
Europe using WTO rules (1). Friends of the Earth campaigners were out
during the European Social Forum in Paris to launch their ‘bite back’
campaign (2) and gather support against the USA initiative.

Among the first signatories of the citizen's objection are South
African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, French activist and farmer Jose Bové
as well as the writer and Attac activist Susan George, Indian
ecologist and researcher Dr. Vandana Shiva, director of the US based
Public Citizen Lori Wallach and Member of European Parliament Dr.
Caroline Lucas. The protest action in Paris is the start of a European
wide tour of an inflatable GMO ' monster' tomato. The tomato will
travel through 15 European countries in the next 6 months (3).

Alexandra Wandel, trade campaigner at FoEE said: ‘Old Europe has shown
its teeth in Paris. Decisions about our food should not be made by
George W. Bush or the WTO. Ten thousands made this clear in Paris
objecting against Bush’s plan to force-feed us GMOs.’

Friends of the Earth was present at the ESF with a large delegation
highlighting ecological impacts of corporate-led globalisation and
outlining alternatives for a fair and sustainable Europe. FoE
campaigners spoke at numerous plenary sessions, seminars and workshops
contributing to the construction of another Europe.

Frederic Thoma, corporate accountability campaigner at FoEE
said: ‘Corporate-led globalisation is the powerful engine behind
environmental devastation, growing social inequalities and human
rights abuses -- the issues discussed at the ESF in Paris. As our
governments do little to bring improvement, citizens come together and
work on the alternatives. Governments should for once carefully listen
to the outcomes if a sustainable, equitable and democratic Europe is
what they really want.’

Notes:
(1) In May this year the US started a formal complaint with the
World Trade Organisation against Europe’s restrictions on GM food and
crops. If the US wins then either Europe will have to face enormous
financial penalties or allow more GM foods and crops. The FoEE
citizens objection is available at http://www.bite-back.org
(2) From 12th to 15th November the 2nd European Social Forum was
held in Paris with about 60000 participants from over 60 countries to
work on alternatives to economic globalisation.
(3) The Bite Back GM Monster Tomato will tour through Paris, Mont de
Marsan, Toulouse, Madrid, Barcelona, Namur, Amsterdam, Aarhus,
Copenhagen, Warsaw, Budapest, Nyiregyhaza (Hungary), Zagreb, Vienna,
Tbilisi (Georgia), Limassol (Cyprus), Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine) and a
number of German cities in the next 6 months.
