Between 9 – 13 October, the Romanian National Commission for UNESCO is implementing the project “The role of mass-media in treating the refugees & migrants topic”, funded within UNESCO’s Participation Program, project for which the German Commission provided a support letter. The project aims to train 45 European journalists in specific topics related to one of the most sensitive and pressing issues in Europe in recent times, the hosting of refugees and migrants fleeing conflict areas and poverty in Middle East and Africa. Creating in-depth knowledge of this important subject would lead to a more unbiased, useful, reliable and accurate media coverage.

The project implies 5 major trainings, 1 per day, delivered each by a different specialist. The themes are predefined:

1. International law on refugee rights and migration.
2. Migrants, a burden or an opportunity? Who are they, where are they coming from, why? The gender dimension of migration and youth dynamics. Cross – cultural competency/familiarization.
3. How decisive is the role of the media in treating the refugee topic? To what extent are the media responsible for shaping public opinion about refugees? How much of the hate speech of public personalities and influencers should be promoted? Is the media asking the right questions to the parties involved in the issue in order to form a complete and accurate perspective?

Participants need to be good English speakers and be available to participate in all 5 days of training. All discussions will be in English, there will be no translation available. Access to trainings is only allowed to journalists who subscribe in advance, the number of available places being limited.

We would like to ask the German Commission's help in identifying a journalist from Germany, with interest/expertise on the topic to participate in this workshop. We cover travel, accommodation and meals. We would appreciate it if you sent us the nomination by the end of this month. I attach the registration form to be filled out by the incoming journalist.

Should you have interest in this topic, I also cordially invite you to participate as a special guest. Unfortunately, coverage of expenses is available only for the foreign journalists and the foreign trainers. We welcome also a trainer nomination from your behalf, at the moment none of the 5 trainings are covered, the discussions with the prospective trainers are ongoing.

Best regards,
Iris
