More about Access Info Europe:
Access Info has a focus on advancing the right of access to information in Europe. We were founded in 2006 to meet a need for a European region organisation dedicated to promoting this right.
There is also a global dimension to Access Info’s work, as we work on standards and campaigning with communities active in the areas that include the right to information, open data, open government, anti-corruption, lobby transparency and corporate transparency. We work closely with global movements working on participation, anti-corruption and accountability, and transparency in international development.
Current priority focus areas for Access Info include promoting access to decision-making information in practice, continuing to promote a strong legal framework for the right of access to information and the EU and national levels, campaigning for lobby transparency, and campaigning for greater corporate transparency with a focus on company ownership.
We conduct research into a number of areas related to the right of access to information. We have a current focus on how to balance privacy and the right to information. We have also just completed Europe-wide research into data on migration detention as part of our human rights programme.
Access Info Europe takes a strategic litigation approach to defending the right of access to information and, working with pro bono lawyers, we regularly undertake appeals and litigation to challenge refusals to release information. We have won one important case against the EU on the right of access to documents as well as having secured information at the national level as a result of appeals.
Access Info Europe provides support and strategic guidance to partner organisations on research projects and conducts training, in particular for journalists as well as for civil society activists.
