(Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union ( http://www.abu.org.my/abu/index.cfm/elementid/69639/New-manual-for-media-on-disaster-risk-reduction )) The United Nations has published a new online manual for the media on disaster risk reduction. The 190-page manual, Disaster Through a Different Lens, has been produced by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN-ISDR) with the help of journalists and disaster experts. It stresses the importance of the role of newspapers, radio, television and other media in creating awareness and disseminating information about disasters. The manual is designed for reporters and broadcasters who want to know more about "those urgent, terrifying and all-too-often tragic moments when the fabric of national and civic government encounters the forces of nature", the UN-ISDR says. "Reporters, commentators and broadcasters can do more than just inform and raise awareness about disasters. They can make a real difference in the way people think and act, especially now when climate change is recognised as a major challenge that will aggravate our vulnerability to disasters." The manual is available online at http://www.preventionweb.net/files/20108_mediabook.pdf ( http://www.ejc.net/?URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.preventionweb.net%2Ffiles%2F20108_mediabook.pdf ))
