Dear all,
The AMB-report Namibia 2011, launched on the 29^th of November, shows a
more differentiated picture of Namibia's media landscape than the
contentious ranking as Africa's number one by Freedom House in terms of
media freedom.
In general, their constitution gives all Namibians the right to freedom
of expression, including freedom of the press and other media. However,
this freedom is restricted by other pieces of legislation - or the lack
thereof, e.g. an Access to Information Bill has been on the government's
agenda since 1999.
The media landscape is described as displaying "...variety but no
depth." Business, economics and analytical reporting are often being
neglected by the media. Self-censorship, too, seems to be an issue,
especially in state-run media houses.
A positive development was the set-up of the office of the Media
Ombudsman in 2009, who holds the media accountable in terms of the basic
principles of good journalistic practice.
