He also worked as an online feature writer and as managing editor of the World Service newsroom. He was a documentary maker, producer and news programme editor with the BBC World Service for over 20 years, covering major international breaking news stories and political and military affairs in Africa. As a programme editor he won the Plain English Campaign's award for best documentary series and as a training designer he was part of the team that won the World of Learning award for online learning solution of the year for the BBC's legal Online programme. He has published widely on African political and military affairs and has recently published an extensive survey of British media reporting of the 2007-8 violence in Kenya. He is currently researching the phenomenon of Hate Radio in global conflicts.
