Well, when I recreated my Ubuntu flash drive and installed
smartmontools, I got version 7.2. I must have been doing something
wrong.
I'm using 24.04 LTS Desktop. When I run smartctl it tells me I
need to use sudo apt install smartmontools to get it. Is there a
newer version I should be using?

I often use a Live USB of Ubuntu for data recovery,
hard drive testing (especially since the current Windows

I guess that Live USB with that Ubuntu must be a very
old version. Ubuntu 20.04 (focal) is 4 years old and ships
with smartmontools 7.1.... Update your Live USB maybe?

You could also compile smartmontools from source, which
is fairly easy (see https://www.claudiokuenzler.com/blog/1368/how-to-read-smart-drive-health-status-samsung-portable-ssd-external-drive,
