I think you have a misunderstanding about what smartmontool does.

This tool does no testing at all. The testing is done by the firmware of 
the disk (which has its own cpu and memory). It runs independently of 
the computer. The tests have been coded by the disk manufacturer, so 
nobody can add anything.

What the program does is tell the disk to test itself, and later query 
the progress and results, or other data collected during functioning.
