For an overview:

man smartctl
man smartd

Some very basic ways to use (change sda to whatever disk device you have,
check what you have with "lsblk -f"):
smartctl -a /dev/sda (all disk info)
smartctl -i /dev/sda (model, etc info)
smartctl -H /dev/sda (just health info)
