All:

I am running smartmontools 7.2 installed via Homebrew on macOS 10.14.6
(Darwin 18.7.0); all disks are internal SATA. All lines in smartd.conf
are commented out execpt the following two (shown between dashed lines
for clarity, but dashed lines are not present in smartd.conf):

------------------

/dev/disk0 -s (S/../.././01|L/../../6/02) -m myaddress at mymailservice.com
/dev/disk2 -s (S/../.././01|L/../../6/02) -m myaddress at mymailservice.com

------------------

If I run smartd as:

MyShellPrompt% sudo smartd -d

the short selftests execute as scheduled at hour 01 and return a
"Completed without error" Status.

However, if I run smartd as:

MyShellPrompt% sudo smartd

the short selftests fail to run and I get the following output at the
Console:

2021-03-03 01:08:03.168132 -0600    smartd    3255: 0x40353    0
smartd    Device: /dev/disk0, execute Short Self-Test failed.
2021-03-03 01:08:03.178126 -0600    smartd    3255: 0x40353    0
smartd    Device: /dev/disk2, execute Short Self-Test failed.

Any body have a clue as to why, or any pointers as to where to look next
for the problem?

Thanks,

Dave
