[smartmontools-support] scsiReadDefect12 in scsicmds.cpp is causing Non-medium error count to increase by 1

I have a few Toshiba PX04SVB320 SAS SSDs and whenever I try to read 
their SMART data, the "Non-medium error count" value increments by 1.

I've found some other users are having the same problem with different 
SAS SSDs.

It seems the error is caused by the scsiReadDefect12 function.

When I patch the function by simply returning 101 without doing 
anything, the value stays the same. Of course this means smartctl is not 
really querying the SSD.

The issue happens with a RAID card or with a HBA card, both LSI made.

When I issue the "smartctl -a" command on one of these SSDs, the LSI 
firmware also reports this error:
