... not "(second device) polling" but "second (device polling)" or 
"second check of all devices". The first check of all devices is done 
during smartd startup but scheduled self-tests are temporarily disabled 
then.

On Debian with systemd, see /lib/systemd/system/smartd.service and the 
configured EnvironmentFile (usually /etc/default/smartmontools).
