The latest generation of WD Passport drives (sometimes) requires the -d 
sat option to access SMART data, but even with that entered, extended 
tests hang at 80% even over several days.  This occurs under both 
Windows 10 and Linux.  Western Digital supplies a utility which can run 
extended tests (Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics), so it's 
technically possible.
