[Smartmontools-database] TOSHIBA-MQ04UBF100 on Windows

Hello.

My mother got a pair of Toshiba 2.5" drives that appear dying.
I can speculate that all 2.5" drives today are SMR (shingled) but many
prefer to hide it, thus they explicitly avoid supporting TRIM command,
and after heavy usage start to degrade...

Worst thing to me, those drives seems to be dying while showing
all-green SMART status :-/

Using Win7x64 I tried to use smartctl as the most "close to metal"
tool - and found it does not work at all.

I see that this disk was already added to the database - but on Linux.

However, not on Windows...

TOSHIBA-MQ04 (manuf. JUN 2019) has USB-3 connection on PCB, so there
is no option to try another bridge.
I used another dying Toshiba drive one from 2014 laptop (MQ01, manuf.
APR 2014), native SATA one, connected via el cheapo USB cable - and it
was detected by smartctl, so it is not a Windows issue....

Ironically labels at both drives claim power to be DC 5V 1.0A.
While it is okay for a native SATA drive, it sounds weird for USB-3
drive which specs support 0.9A at most...

Well-known Windows tools - HDDScan.com (free as in beer?) and
CrystalDiskInfo (free as in libre?) show the drive SMART status,
though it feels they do it very slowly.

I was very confused with drives clearly dying while SMART status
scaled values show no any degradation. I tried to invoke self-tests
hoping that maybe this would change the reported stats.

Another option for me was that maybe it is some bug in CDI, that makes
it show all "current value" as nomal.
At the same time CDI signals alert because of raw values (which are
not normative by SMART standard AFAIK) and keeps doing so even after i
override the thresholds to be above raw values on C5 (Unstable Pending
Sectors) attribute. So I started suspecting a bug in the CDI.

CDI has no options to start tests, HS can launch SMART self-tests, but
seems not able to fetch the result from that disk.
The HS "running tasks" window switches from "Executing" status to
"error" but gives no error code.

....i hoped to have a more details peek inside using SMT/win32, but
turned out it just does not work.

May it be at least some opportunity to enhance SMT/win32 ? Perhaps you
can look into CDI sources to enhance your own Windows port?
Sadly CDI report does not specify which specific bridge support
subroutine it uses...
