Dear Martin,
thats not that easy you think. The idea of an europewide workinggroup is
nice and we discuss that since one year. But in practice its very hard to go
forward. You know the only thing we have at the moment is that list. We have
no money and we dont have a structure that we can use. In the last 2 years
we made some small stuff to advertice the individual membership and the
european left. We made that flyer - that is printed in a circulation of
10.000 pieces in germany - we also made an frensh, an english and an czech
version of that flyer. We also have people that can translate that flyer in
other languages to promote the individual membership and the EL. But in fact
there is no support on that. The money that was required for printing the
german flyers i got from my local group - the frensh flyer could not be
printed cause we didnt had money on that. So just another example: We
(Steven, Uli and me) spoke at the 2nd EL Congress in Prague to Lothar Bisky
about the future of the party of the european left and of course as an
important tool for that the individual membership. So we made an agreement
that we will met in the next months before the next EL Ex.Board meeting to
discuss our suggestions for participation of individual members. I phoned
with him in december and we determine to met in the second week of january
(so thats also when the first boardmeeting was after the congress) --> The
problem was that i first had to talk to his staffer in berlin - i phoned
there five times and they told everytime they will phone back and tell the
termin. ... So in the end all the time no one recalled. Then i wrote an
E-Mail - also here i didnt get any response. Now after my second mail in
january i got after over one month a response that there is maybe a termin
in summer. Thats strange.. cause the first meeting of the ExBoard was in
January and the second is - like you say - in april. So thats the reality...
the people that are at the important crux of the matter... are enormous
buerocratic and not interested that the building of the party goes forward.
So we have only a limited possibility to do something as a working group of
the european left, cause we dont have money and no support. --> The people
there - or at least their minds - have to change, otherwise there will an
europeanwide antiprivatization campagne or something like that be a nice
dream of the left.
Best wishes,
Mike
PS: And i dont agree in that what you tell about Helmut Scholz.

Subject: [Individual-members-EL] hello everybody!
Dear friends,
It's nice to see that there is a lot of communication going around!
I have to admit I didn't read all the messages..
I personally am very happy that in the 2nd EL Congress the only thing
concerning the content what changed in the statute
was the erasure of the sentence about individual membership being only for
an experimental phase.
I know it's a little success but still. The result of this is that now the
Secretariat and the statute commission
have to draft concrete rights and tasks for the individual members, I expect
a result in April
as the next meeting of the Executive board will be only at that time.
Concerning some remarks I read:
I want to apologize, if there has been a slow response from the EL office
concerning EL individual membership.
I can guarantee you that these were accidents, meaning not done on purpose.
Especially they don't have anything to do with Helmut Scholz!
We have four half time posts here which means on the paper 20 hours a week.
Now we have been demanding for ¾ posts and we got them, which we appreciate
a lot!
We have been distributing the work and I think that the communication with
individual member improved by now.
Sometimes it's a bit lot post, fax and emails going round.
If anybody feels that there is no response at all, please give us a ring!
Anyway I hope that the EL office won't be seen as an "obstacle" for
individual memberships no more.
I can guarantee within EL structures our reputation is the opposite! We sill
do our best to do so.
I personally liked very much the idea of Sigfrido in proposing a working
group by the EL individual members,
If that is combined with other parties and especially with the Italian big
section, I think this idea could have a chance!
What do you think!? As you know there is no concrete legislation set up for
individual members,
so why not come up already with this sort of moderate ideas to check how the
executive board will respond?!
Anyway as I said concrete legislation will be drafted..
Greetings
Martin
