To keep international law as basis for any solution for the future status of
Kosovo

The news arriving, every time more intensively, concerning Kosovarian
government's intentions to declare unilaterally its independence next 17 of
February are really alarming. Moreover there are some concerns on the
intention expressed by many EU's Member States to proceed with its
recognition - obviously following the intention of the Bush-administration
and trying to create another precedence to breaking resp. changing the rules
of the international law and the regime of United Nations - achieved and
developed after WW II. This step will could lead to introduce new critical
elements, for other subjects' aspirations to pursue their own geo-political
goals.

The Party of the European Left opposes to this hypothesis. We call again on
the European Parliament and on every national Parliament to follow the UN
resolution 1244, that ended the conflict against Serbia. We call on all
peace-loving and fighting for peace and democracy forces in Europe - despite
their positions about the policies carried out by the governments of Serbia
and Kosovo and everywhere else to strive consequently for defending and
strictly implementing international law to find a common respected political
solution towards the perspective of the Serbian state and the future status
of Kosovo.

These rules are not allowing unilateral declarations or recognitions of
independence.

The European Left calls on European political forces of EU as well as other
European countries to exercise an autonomous and transparent role proposing
a policy for the area based on the international Law. This must include the
recognition of those countries decision to become Member of the European
Union if such political decision - democratically to be achieved and voted
by the population in all countries of the Balkans - is adopted.
