Part 1

For me to be on the left in europe is to argue for an expansion of democracy amongst ordinary people.  To do that they must be engaged in changing the world.  To do that you must promote discussion, debate, democracy, decision and do it.

Ordinary people in local communities, unions, peace groups active and particpating in changing things, coming together under bigger banners, Stop The War, CND, Greenpeace, Social Forum, to advance specific causes.  Greater development of the social movements and greater involvement in the social movements by ordinary people.

The role of the party in this is as a facilitator of the people.  The party is a place for activists who are conscious and aware of what they are trying to achieve.  Things like the trade union network that i'm involved in come together to discuss and to plan action, to support, to provdie solidarity to struggles party members are involved in.  In turn these party members are involved in the social movements and campaigns and they can bring to the party the requests for asssitance, for resources of the ordinary people.  The community and the party develop together, the party winning members of the community to its ranks during the struggle so as the party structures can develop and grow the consciousness which can be taken back to the community in a dialectical relationship between the party and the people.

Then the people can vote the party into councils, regional assemblies, national parliaments, european parliaments so as the party can first in opposition help utilise the resources and status these bodies bring on behalf of the people and work towards perhaps coalition government where influence can be made in policy as the party continues its grassroots work and eventually government so the party can change the laws to move towards greater socialisation of the means of production, distribution and exchange.

The problem for indivdual members in england in the moment is that there are limited opportunities to engage with the party as the party is a network of a dozen or so people without status in the greater forums of the party.  This lack of status means the party does not put resouces into growing the network.  It effectively asks the dozen or so who have been built up member by member over 6 years to do more things themselves.  that is impossible for us, so for now my grassroots work is in the union I work for and my top end work is trying to get the party to recognise and support more the development of European Left England.

Presently the party is ignoring me, so what is great potential development goes no-where.

Part 2

For the English colleagues the report I wanted to give you is the SWP Respect have selected candidates for the Greater London Council election.  They are running Lindsay Germain.SWPer for Mayor.  I don't think they can use the name Respect, but it will be alist formj their group.

Respect Renewal, George Galloways group are trying to get together a 'progressive' list to run for the GLA including Respect Renewal and other 'progressive groups.  George is talking to lots of community groups and I understand a number of unions.  He is also looking at the European elections in 2009.  He says he wants a broader group than Repsect Renewal.  I met with him and Kevin from his office about two weeks ago

I suspect from what I've read Respect Renewal can't use the respect name either, although George says his group has it.  He is also personally supporting Ken Livingstone the Labour Mayor and asking Respect Renewal to do the same.  There is some discussion within his group about that.

Obviously any individual EL member can chose what s/he would want to do in relation to such a 'progressive' list but I was interested in what other members thought.  I suspect George Galloway would want to be on such a list, but he says the discussions between the groups involved would determine who stands.

So SWP Respect standing their own list which is determined.  Respect Renewal trying to put together a 'progressive' list.  What do other people think?

  My name is Syed Shakir Ali, I am from Pakistan and belong to Leftist group in Pakistan since last 18 years when I was very young. I am very happy to see the best collaboration with all communist people in the European Union with each other through the forum of European Left.

  I read the email regular basis very properly which comes to me from your forum. I would like to express my some feelings and questions here in order to get fast achievement of our goal.

    1.. Only European Communists have power or ability to change the whole world economist, disorder of wealth, provide the basic needs to all human being without any difference of Nation, Religious, Cast, or etc, break the poverty, provide free education, provide housing? Or they don't need to include other part of the world Communist? Or they are thinking in same manner as their big multi national companies in their countries thinking to achieve the extra profit from the third world and fulfill the needs of their own nation as they are already doing from the last 50 years.

    2.. European Communists don't follow Mr. Karl Marx, he taught us "Become one all Labor from the whole world" what its means? We all and all working classes are in problems through out the world, our problems are different country to country and depending on the society situation, but the problem makers are same those created the problems for us, wealth distribution disorder, Poverty Level, Economic misbalancing and etc. why we don't consider and take step to become one Power, its call Great Labor Power from Australia to Canada including all Arab Countries, Asian Countries, whole Europe, African Countries, Latin America, South America.

    3.. What do you think how the change will comes in our Societies? Through Democracy or it will come through Great revolution as it has done in the past i.e. Soviet Union, China, and other Socialist Countries. However the there is no concept of Democracy in the third world and in Arab Countries. All European and American Government and economist reforms in their own countries time to time in order to stop the social and communist activities in their countries, they are very scared with Socialist Revolution. They are feeding some part of their profit to their nation from the last 50 years (which they earned from third world).

    4.. Why leftist are silences on major issues of the whole world. Terrorism, Religious distribution specially in the third world, Poverty Level in the Third World, providing Education, Health, Housing to all working class in the Third World Gulf issue, Israel and Philistine issue, Iran and North Korea matter with the United States, monopoly of biggest super power in the United Nation, Iraq War, Afghanistan War, Pakistan Terrorism war.      

    5.. Does European Union Leftist can dream to be one world; all working class movement and struggle comes together under one roof. Our enemies are same but faces are different, we all have problem but natures are different. We all are same human being. Why we don't struggle together. Our interest are same, we all needs to be away from this capitalist society.

  May be some one disagree with my above suggestion and expression, if yes, please rectify me. I will be much thankful to all of you to spending your precious time to read above.
