[Individual-members-EL] fundamental EU legislation

Hi to all individual members on the mailing list,

The EU constitution is back on the agenda, so is decision-making on the European level. While many people and politicians
would see national sovereignty at stake with majority votes implemented and a gradual shift away from veto options, others favour a United States of Europe with a federal structure, a powerful parliament and quick, simplified decision-making processes.
The evolving European parties are discussing how much inner-party democracy they should venture: The PES (European social democrats) last weekend adopted a new statute with very little progress allowing for qualified majority votes in a few cases while unanimity remains the overall goal. With this they still are ahead of the European Left.
In late November the parliamentary party of the Left in Germany (member of the EL) issued a memorandum on a new draft constitution stressing national sovereignty and the principle of consensus with qualified majority votes in the Council being clearly restricted.

I think, very much in the EU of today and tomorrow – its power and institutional progress, the pace of development and integration, the acceptance by the people – depends on how much real politics is possible on the European level.

So, dear individual members, what’s YOUR/what is going to be OUR opinion on these questions?
How should decision-making be arranged in the future EU, and in the EL of 2007 and beyond?
How much sovereignty should EU member states be granted?

Best wishes,

Uli
