Er leitet u.a. ein Projekt zum „Internationalen Rechtspopulismus im Kontext globaler ökologischer Krisen“ und forscht zu Rechtsextremismus und anderen Gefährdungspotenzialen der demokratischen Kultur. Von 2002 bis 2019 forschte und lehrte Salheiser an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena.
