Guy Standing is Professor of Economic Security at the University of
Bath in the UK. Prior to joining the University of Bath in 2006, he was
Director of the Socio-Economic Security Programme of the International
Labour Organisation in Geneva. He has authored, co-authored and edited
more than 25 books and has published widely in academic journals. In
2009 he was elected to the Academy of Social Sciences.
Standing has just completed a book on occupations, linked to the global
transformation of work and labour (Work After Globalization: Building
Occupational Citizenship, Edward Elgar, 2009). Recurrent themes of his
research, often drawing on extensive household and workplace surveys,
have been the insecurities faced by workers in the wake of reforms of
labour law, labour regulation and social protection, and the rationale
for moving towards unconditional income transfers. A key question
linking these themes is whether or not a global labour market model is
emerging.
