face=Verdana>Oct 24/03<BR>Reuters<BR>By Richard Cowan<BR>WASHINGTON - U.S. Trade
Representative spokesman Richard Mills was cited as telling Reuters in a
telephone interview Friday that the Bush administration has "concerns" about new
biotech labeling regulations finalized last week in the European Union, but it
is too early to know whether a legal challenge will be mounted, adding, "We are
examining the regulation in light of (the EU's) WTO obligations."<BR>Referring
to the labeling requirement, Mills said that the administration is concerned
that the regulation "does not meet the standard requiring that information
should be non-prejudicial in presentation."<BR>Mills also said that even if it
wanted to, USTR could not file a WTO complaint until the regulations go into
effect.<BR>Tony Van der haegen, an EU biotech specialist in Washington, was
cited as insisting that the final rules were scientifically based and he noted
that the EU traceability requirements were similar to new American bioterrorism
regulations requiring a paper trail for food being exported to the United
States.</FONT><BR></DIV></A></FONT>
