The Spanish Young Greens on the 23rd anniversary of Chernobyl accident
At the occasion of the 23rd anniversary of the catastrophe of Chernobyl, the Spanish Young Greens (Jóvenes Verdes) carried out actions in Madrid and Valencia.
Dressed in security suits members of Jóvenes Verdes handed out leaflets and collected signatures in Madrid's park “El Retiro” in the morning of April 26th. The objective was to inform passers-by about the dangers of nuclear energy, the renewable alternatives, and ask them to support the campaign “I'm against nuclear energy”, a conjoint effort between several ecologists organizations in Spain, and to vote green in the upcoming European elections in the frame of the Federation of Young European Greens' campaign Green On!
A week later, Young Greens in Valencia took part in a similar action. Additionally, on this occasion, several activists undressed in “Plaza de la Virgen” square and held a banner that said “when it comes to nuclear radiation, we're all naked”. The activists chanted slogans as “nuclear waste will be for your children!” and “when it comes to radiation, we're naked and you're naked too!”
The Spanish Young Greens are also organizing several film-forums about nuclear energy in Madrid, Valencia, Bilbao and Málaga. The aim of these activities is to provide some background information about the uranium production process and nuclear energy in relation to climate change and bring up some discussion afterwards.
During these weeks, nuclear energy will be on the spotlight in Spain as the government will be deciding in mid-June whether to shut down the oldest active nuclear plant “Santa María de Garoña” in Burgos or to renew its operation license for another ten years. Jóvenes Verdes pushes not only to shut down Garoña's facility, but all the rest of nuclear plants in Spain on a gradual basis.
