Dear receiver of the FYEG General list.

This is the first issue of the FYEG newsletter, and the General list will
soon be turned into a receivers list of the newsletter. Discussions on
FYEG-related issues can of course be continued on various other
e-mail-lists, as well as on the web-forum, during the various activities,
exchanges and camps that FYEG is involved in, and so on. Hope you find the
information useful! At the end, there is information on how to stop
receiving this list.

The idea is that this newsletter will be sent out once every two weeks.

4. News on European Green Party/Green Group and others

Greens/EFA welcome rejection of software patents

On the 6th of July the European Parliament rejected a directive on
computer-implemented inventions by 648 votes to 14. The Greens/EFA group
in the European Parliament welcomed the move as the second best option
available to MEPs.

"The European Patent Office must now accept that there are no majorities
in favour of software patents. The office must halt its current practice
of granting patents for software, a practise for which there is no legal
basis. The EPO should think now about creating policies that benefit not
only big business," said the Austrian member of the legal affairs
committee, Eva Lichtenberger of the Greens/EFA group in the European
Parliament.
