Kyoto is just the Beginning!

The Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement against global warming, comes into force on Wednesday, the 16th of February. It is a big day after the long fight for putting reins to the global warming.

The success of the Kyoto protocol shows that political dreams can come true. Anyhow, the Kyoto will only be the starting point for an even longer process for finding control mechanisms to the emissions causing the climate change.

"In this stage it's important to stress that the real implementation of the agreement is still on the way. We have to keep on stressing that changes in CO2 emissions need changes in the policies of EU member states as well as consumer habits of citizens.", says Stefanie de Niet, Dutch Co-spokesperson of the Federation of Young European Greens, FYEG.

"This is the high time to take the climate change seriously and include the climate change perspective to all political decisions. According to latest researches, scenarios for next 100 years are terrifying. I don't want to move to Brussels because the Golf stream will stop and the Nordic countries will face a new Ice Age.", states Simo Salmela, Finnish Co-spokesperson of the Federation of Young European Greens, FYEG.

There is need for further regulation of the CO2 emissions on a global level. The EU should set its next aim to reduce the emissions down 30% by 2020 from the 1990 level. Furthermore, the aim for 2050 should be one fourth of the emissions compared to the 1990 level.
