Press Release, 19th of August 2005

Federation of Young European Greens against EU subsidies to catholic youth festival

FYEG criticises the European Comission for allocating a subsidy of 1.5 million Euros to the catholic church for the organisation of the catholic youth festival currently taking place in Koeln, Germany, with the participation of Mr.Ratzinger.

Ska Keller, spokesperson of FYEG, says:
"It is a great scandal that the European Comission decided to allocate 1.5 million Euros to the catholic church for the organisation of that festival. It is a fact that clearly contradicts the separation of the public and private field in society. A laic European Union should not spend such a huge amount of money on activities of a religion that is not representing all citizens of the EU.”

Ernest Urtasun, spokesperson of FYEG adds:
“Furthermore, the festival will be visited by Mr.Ratzinger, known for his homophobic and very aggressive and highly offensive political stances points of view. The EU should not subvention activities such as this. It is specially a scandal that this decision is made the same year that the European Comission will probably cut the money allocated for the european youth policy and that the European Youth Forum was not consulted before the decision was taken".
