FYEG Demands Fair Treatment for Cap Anamur Refugees

The Federation of Young European Greens is concerned about the way the 37 refugees of the ship Cap Anamur are treated by the Italian authorities.

Stefanie de Niet, Co-Spokesperson of FYEG says, “The refugees need fair treatment by the law on their applications for asylum. Putting them into detention like the Italian authorities have done is not acceptable. But not only Italy, also Germany is responsible for this since the refugees applied for asylum in Germany. The German authorities should handle these applications and are not to hand over their responsibility to Italy.”

Though the refugees entered the EU first in Italy, they applied for asylum on a German boat and therefore Germany is in charge of the applications.

The harmonisation of the EU asylum law should lead to common high standards, not to building a stronger “Fortress Europe” that is inaccessible for those in need.

Furthermore, de Niet condemns the arrest of the representative of Cap Anamur, Elias Bierdel, the Captain, Stefan Schmidt and the First Mate, Vladimir Daschkewitsch: “These people were arrested because they helped people in need. This treatment is symbolic of an attitude that criminalizes humanity. Although the three are now back in freedom they might have to go to back to court. Instead of bringing them to court, the Italian government should honour them for their efforts.”
