<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size:12.0pt">13 June marks Albinism Awareness Day, as proclaimed by the United Nations. In some African countries, people with albinism still face discrimination and persecution based on the belief that their
body parts can confer magical powers. There is also an urgent need to protect these individuals from skin cancer.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-size:12.0pt">A new book for African schoolchildren called Albinism – Just a Gene! with colourful illustrations, explains the genetic basis of pigmentation in people, including those with albinism. Albinism
is a recessive pigment disorder that causes very light skin, light eyes, and poor vision. “We urgently need more scientific information on this issue to be taught in schools,” says Gudrun Rappold, Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Heidelberg
in Germany and author of the book. The book is available to download for free in 22 African languages from the website:
