freedom in Europe needs to be defended, preserved and
protected. That is the mission of the<b> E</b><b>uropean
Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF)</b>, based in
Leipzig, Germany.

<p>Currently, ECPMF and its partners are implementing the
Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR), a Europe-wide
mechanism, which tracks, monitors and reacts to
violations of press and media freedom in EU Member
States and Candidate Countries. This project provides
legal and practical support, public advocacy and
information to protect journalists and media workers.
Advocacy is a crucial element of this and other ongoing
projects.</p>
<p>ECPMF is hiring an <a moz-do-not-send="true"
href="https://www.ecpmf.eu/advocacy-officer/">Advocacy
Officer</a> to start as soon as possible, ideally from
mid-July 2020. You will be responsible for all advocacy
activities at ECPMF and represent ECPMF’s mission in the
public and political debate. In this position, you need
to be a self-starter and a reliable team player. You
will work in close collaboration with international
partners and their communication teams. The Advocacy
Officer reacts to threats to media freedom that are
identified through monitoring activities with direct
communication, awareness-raising and missions on the
ground.</p>
<p>Because the ECPMF is project-funded, the employment
contract is due to end on 28. February 2021, with the
possibility of continued employment.</p>

<p><strong>The job entails:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Monitoring threats to press freedom and related
policy debates among relevant inter-governmental
actors in Europe</li>
<li>Co-ordinating and implementing advocacy initiatives
for media freedom and for journalists at risk across
Europe within ECPMF’s advocacy objectives</li>
<li>Producing and disseminating advocacy materials
(social media, statements, open letters) and
delivering expertise for reports and studies</li>
<li>Conceptualising and implementing international
advocacy events, and in-country missions for
fact-finding and advocacy</li>
<li>Building and maintaining networks of European
institutions, political stakeholders and partners in
the Freedom of Expression community</li>
<li>Representing the organisation to promote its
advocacy agenda and priorities</li>
<li>Co-operating with the management and the
communications department to ensure ECPMF’s messaging
and strategic approach aligns with advocacy goals</li>
<li>Contributing to project proposals to funders and
reporting to the European Commission</li>
<li>Supporting the work of colleagues who deliver
practical assistance to journalists under threat.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>What we expect from you:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>A degree in a socio-political subject (political
science, communication science, media studies, law,
human rights) or equivalent educational programme</li>
<li>At least 3-5 years of professional experience in
advocacy or policy work, ideally in Non-Governmental
Organisations (NGOs) or human rights campaigning</li>
<li>Demonstrable understanding and knowledge of
EU-institutions, media freedom or journalism and
politics. A strong network of contacts in this field
is desirable</li>
<li>Experience in advocating for and communicating
complex policy issues (desirable)</li>
<li>Knowledge of social media, especially Twitter, as an
advocacy tool</li>
<li>Experience in handling multiple activities at once,
ability to work under pressure</li>
<li>Fluency in English, knowledge of German desirable.
Additional languages are a bonus</li>
<li>Excellent written and verbal skills, particularly in
drafting strategic advocacy materials for a diverse
audience</li>
<li>Professionalism, reliability, willingness to take on
responsibilities and excellent co-ordination skills</li>
<li>Familiarity with Microsoft Office and other relevant
software.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>You can expect from us:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>You will be working in a team with a collegial
atmosphere in an international environment</li>
<li>Your salary will be based on TVL-11, depending on
previous expertise</li>
<li>This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) and
may involve travel within Europe</li>
<li>A workplace in the Gohlis district in the city of
Leipzig including German employment benefits and 30
days’ holiday per year</li>
<li>The possibility of continued employment</li>
