<p class="MsoNormal">I would like to draw your attention to the outcomes of a small research project on strategies of state control over exiled activists and journalists. Using the case of Iran, the research investigated how digital media enable new and influence
established tactics of state repression against information activists beyond borders.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14747731.2016.1263078">This paper in Globalizations</a> gives a detailed insight into the measures and aims of transnational repression. I argue that with the help of digital media state
actors can seek to undermine the links of exiles into the home country and to punish claims to public attention that challenge the position of the regime in the domestic and international arena.

<p class="MsoNormal">Together with Dana Moss (University of Pittsburgh) I compare the Iranian and the Syrian case in

this Intervention on ‘Extraterritorial Authoritarian Power’</a> for Political Geography.

<p class="MsoNormal"><a href="https://ojs.library.queensu.ca/index.php/surveillance-and-society/article/view/6635">And this piece for Surveillance & Society</a> focuses on the effects of digitally enabled surveillance against transnational information activists
from Iran. It is part of a larger collection on the “Global Turn to Authoritarianism” with many interesting contributions on surveillance regimes in other countries as well as theoretical reflections.

<p class="MsoNormal">This research has been part of a larger project on “<a href="http://www.authoritarianism-global.uva.nl/">Authoritarianism in the Global Age</a>” at the University of Amsterdam. One research axis explored how contemporary authoritarian regimes
respond and adapt to the proliferation of digital communication technologies. <o:p>
