<P class=p1>Vision, Revolution, endlich eine Stimme für die arabische Welt? Al-Jazeera symbolisiert das kulturelle und nahezu zwangsläufig auch politische Erwachen einer Zivilgesellschaft im Dornröschenschlaf. Dass das kleine Emirat Katar den Sender finanziert, verlieh Al-Jazeera zunächst zusätzliche Legitimität und zerstreute Sorgen, es handele sich um ein trojanisches Pferd für Hegemoniebestrebungen der großen Regionalmächte. Ist dieser Zauber nun verflogen, da die Vorwürfe, Katar instrumentalisiere den Sender für die eigenen außenpolitischen Ambitionen, immer lauter werden? Welche Ziele verfolgt das Emirat und welchen Einfluss hat sein vermeintlicher Aufstieg auf das regionale Machtgefüge? </P>

<P class=p1>Gemeinsam mit der Regionalwissenschaftlerin und Katar-Expertin <B>Anna Sunik</B> (GIGA Institut für Nahost-Studien, Hamburg) und dem langjährigen Berlin-Korrespondenten von Al-Jazeera, <B>Aktham Suliman</B>, möchten wir über den Aufstieg des kleinen Emirats Katar zum regionalen Player und die Frage, welche Rolle Al-Jazeera in diesem Kontext spielen kann, soll und darf diskutieren. Selbstverständlich werden wir dabei auch die aktuellen Ereignisse in der Region in den Blick nehmen. </P>

<P class=p1>Mit der Veranstaltungsreihe Hintergrundgespräche bietet YATA Germany ihren Mitgliedern und der interessierten Öffentlichkeit die Möglichkeit, sich in einem informellen Rahmen zu aktuellen außen- und sicherheitspolitischen, aber auch gesellschaftlichen Fragen im transatlantischen und internationalen Kontext untereinander auszutauschen. Tandeminputs, die von Experten aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven geliefert werden, liefern inhaltliche Gesprächsgrundlagen und Anregungen für die anschließende Diskussion im Plenum.</P>
