<P><STRONG>The German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ) joined UNESCOs strategy to produce gender-sensitive media content and to reduce stereotyping in the Maghreb countries. The objective of a fair and balanced transmission of womens images is to eliminate socially built gender inequalities in the Maghreb region.</STRONG></P>
<P>The strategy on gender and media, initiated by the UNESCO Office in Rabat, aims at capitalising on media as a powerful tool for transformation of societal practices in order to ensure sustained gender mainstreaming in media content. This strategy provides an integrated framework for cooperation in three key areas:<BR><BR>
<DIV>
<LI>capacity-building of media practitioners, including TV, radio, newspapers and magazines;<BR>
<LI>introduction of a gender approach in journalism education, both across existing modules and through a specific new module on gender and media;<BR>
<LI>awareness raising among policy and decision-makers, and media organizations with a view to creating a professional code of ethics.</LI></DIV><BR>According the Centre for Arab Women Training and Research (CAWTAR), 78% of womens images transmitted by Arab media do not reflect adequately the realities. Other experts state that women are less frequently interviewed and their points of views in documentaries are neglected. <BR><BR>The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) have already joined UNESCOs strategy on gender and media.
