While the continent is on fire and economic crises and powerplay in Ukraine
and the Middle East are leaving Europe on the back foot, understanding
China continues being central to grappling with this turbulent world.
However, journalists are facing a dilemma: as Beijing's growing footprint,
particularly in Eastern Europe, demands more rigorous reporting, access to
reliable information and the room to manoeuvre for journalists covering
China are rapidly shrinking.

Although political analysts have long emphasised the regional and global
impact of China's policies, reporting on the country often remains a blind
spot for the European public. To address this, we asked proficient experts
to join our table at our August kitchen talk.

What is the reality for journalists working on China amid rising pressure?
How does widespread and covert Chinese influence manifest itself,
especially in Europe's East? How to look beyond Chinese propaganda and
clichéd Western narratives?
