Freedom House is seeking a Researcher to assist Media & Democracy, a
research initiative that looks at the relationship between the press and
democracy.
Researcher (part-time contractor), Media & Democracy
Founded in 1941, Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization
dedicated to the expansion of democracy around the globe. Our Research
and Analysis division produces cutting-edge reports on topics such as
the state of democratic institutions, key tactics employed by modern
authoritarians, and how the internet is restricted and increasingly
manipulated to undermine human rights, particularly of society’s most
vulnerable.
Position Summary
Freedom House is seeking a Researcher (part-time contractor) to assist
Media & Democracy, a new, 18-month-long research initiative that
looks at the relationship between the press and democracy in 10 European
countries. Responsibilities include conducting research on the media
ecosystem and policy responses, assisting with project logistics, and
engaging with external experts. This is a part-time, contractual
position ideally based in New York City or Washington DC, with
flexibility for remote locations in the United States.
Key ResponsibilitiesPerform research and writing tasks, monitor key
trends, and assist with preparing case studies on the media markets of
10 countries in Europe (Germany, Italy, France, Poland, Hungary,
Estonia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, Russia) and potentially the United
StatesStrengthen thematic expertise within Freedom House, contribute
analysis on issues of media and democracy, and provide input at internal
and external meetingsAssist the Research Director in designing and
facilitating project plans, goals, and timelines, as well as developing
methods to track and evaluate project processesAssist the Research
Director in designing and distributing the methodology for the pilot
projectAssist the Research Director in developing recommendations for
policymakers, the donor community, and other stakeholders in Europe and
the United StatesAnalyze data and prepare charts, graphics, and other
support materials for publication
Develop a network of regional and thematic experts to serve as new
contributors, and act as a primary point of contact with external
consultants based around the worldPrepare travel and event logistics for
online and in-person meetings and briefingsAssist with funding
proposals, donor reports, and monitoring and evaluation of the project’s
impactEnsure consultant contracts, payment requests, business expense
reports, and other financial documents are in line with Freedom House
requirementsPerform other related duties as assigned
Minimum QualificationsCandidates must possess authorization to work in
the United States.Bachelor’s degree in related field, plus a minimum of
two years of directly related experience; or equivalent combination of
advanced education and experienceComfort working with limited
supervision on long-term tasks, finding solutions to problems as they
arise, and taking responsibility for your workSuperb attention to detail
and an ability to produce error-free work on tight deadlinesAbility to
work remotely as a member of team, and availability in the mornings to
facilitate communication with Europe
Preferred CompetenciesOutstanding English writing skills and a knack
for drafting concise, eloquent, and media-friendly
communicationsKnowledge of the legal, political, and economic factors
and trends that influence the media landscape in EuropeGrasp of
important media policy and regulatory debates globallyDemonstrated
commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in a workplace
settingCommand of Microsoft Word to mark up and reformat documents, and
Excel to create spreadsheets that are smart and neatEmotional
intelligence needed to facilitate cooperation between people with
divergent views and from different cultural backgroundsKnowledge of or
curiosity to explore additional topics related to media and democracy,
such as media business models, regulatory initiatives, and change in the
information environmentSome experience with donor reporting, monitoring
& evaluation, and financial reconciliationsSome experience with using
quantitative data and qualitative information to create methodologies,
infographics, and communication materials for publicationKnowledge of a
regionally relevant languageJournalistic experience an asset
Additional InformationThis is a part-time, contractual position with an
expected 12-15 hours of work per week.The hired candidate is expected to
start in March 2022.Pay is commensurate with experience and based on pay
grades that prioritize equity across the organization. The average
hourly rate for this position ranges between $25 - $30.Diversity makes
